Northway (girls) and Wendigo (boys)
- Camp
Located within Algonquin Park is Canada’s oldest summer camp for girls, Camp Northway. Since 1906 we’ve provided a home in the wilderness each summer for girls 7-16 to explore nature, form lasting friendships, learn new skills, and discover their strengths. Northway fosters independence, resilience, and confidence.
Our founder’s philosophy that girls should learn how to live simply in the outdoors and that the absence of appliances and luxuries would give campers a wilderness experience which they might draw upon throughout their lives still guides us—and is perhaps more relevant today than ever before.
Campers live in canvas tents on platforms—3 campers with their counsellor. In today’s current technology-filled world, this provides a welcome change—the opportunity to connect and interact face-to-face, in a small, screen-free, welcoming community.
Along with our traditional in-camp program, campers at Northway go on canoe or hiking trips, providing them with the opportunity to explore more deeply their natural surroundings.
We believe the ideals of canoe-tripping—friendliness, lending a helping hand, and creative adaptation in a group—are a template for life in camp and throughout adulthood.
Wendigo, a separate small boys camp, offers a unique canoe-tripping program within Algonquin Park where campers learn outdoor skills that will last a lifetime. With a focus on older boys age 12-16, Wendigo provides supervised canoe trips throughout Algonquin’s 7653 square km of protected wilderness.
Boys are involved in every facet of a canoe-trip, learning how to pack out a trip, paddling and navigational skills, the value of efficiency and ingenuity in setting up camp and outdoor cooking. Wendigo’s program helps boys develop canoe-tripping abilities while making new friends and learning teamwork and leadership skills.
