What you offer?
The Otonabee Summer Wilderness Guide implements and facilitates the delivery of quality recreational programs, services and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled at Camp Otonabee. This position functions as part of a team tasked with supervising program participants as they engage in canoe out trips, build self-confidence, and establish lasting friendships. The Otonabee Summer Camp Wilderness Guide can expect to plan canoe trip routes, supervise trip preparation such as packing food and gear, as well as ensure camper and camp counselor safety while on the out trip.
The Wilderness Guide ensures that children and youth have a positive experience leading to personal growth through fun and rewarding recreation in the backcountry. This position fosters self-esteem as well as problem-solving and conflict resolution skills in program participants while working to create an atmosphere of safety, belonging, and positive development in accordance with Y policies and procedures.
Some of the tasks of this position include:
- Responsible for the setup, takedown and supervision of program areas while in the back-country and onsite at Camp Otonabee.
- Function as a team member and will lead program delivery for a group of campers
- position ensures that health and safety regulations and YMCA-YWCA policies and procedures are upheld.
- Perform some housekeeping responsibilities in line with WHIMIS training and COVID-19 procedures – sanitation of equipment, cleaning program areas, etc.
- Assist in set up and takedown of program areas and equipment while in the back-country and at Camp Otonabee
- Participate in swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking, horseback riding and other activities
What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:
- Ability to work in English
- Bilingualism an asset
Experience, Skills, and Abilities
- Current National Lifeguard Certification and/or Bronze Cross
- Paddle Canada, Swift Water Rescue, or other relevant certifications are strongly considered as assets for this position
- Current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR “C” certification
- Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and relationship building skills
- Ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, members, staff, and volunteers
- Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
- Knowledge of risk mitigation in the back-country and while on out trips in a variety of weather and water conditions
- Must adjust communication styles effectively as they interact with people from varied and diverse backgrounds and age groups
- Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with program participants, members, staff, and volunteers
- Communication is verbal and physical, can be in groups or one on one
- Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations
- Ability to be energetic and outgoing
- Ability to give first priority to the campers’ needs
- Ability to be self-motivating, enthusiastic, and a responsible individual with strong leadership skills
- Committed to the healthy development of children
- Ability to use a wide variety of communication devices; such as cell phone, satellite phone, and SPOT device
- Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
- Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector, not more than 6 months old is required
- As a condition of employment, in accordance with the COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement Policy for Staff and Volunteers, you are required to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a valid exemption.
- Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for the Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons, and submit the certificate of completion.
