YMCA Camping and Outdoor Education offers outdoor experiences that foster personal growth and build community. After taking part in our programs, children and youth return home more confident, independent, and with new friendships. YMCA Camp Pine Crest is an overnight camp serving children, families, and organizations through naturally focused programs that embody the mission, vision, and outcomes of the YMCA. Camp Pine Crest is made up of 650 acres of Muskoka wilderness surrounded by 3 interconnected lakes with 8km of shoreline; has over 26km of hiking trails and 7,500 sq. ft. of dock, and has 60 buildings.
The Wellness Director role provides onsite leadership and support to all campers and staff, caring for the mental and physical health of the Pine Crest community and ensuring that all children, youth and staff have a safe and positive camp experience in accordance with Health & Safety guidelines. Daily responsibilities such as health and wellness checks, first aid assessments, medication administration, and stocking first aid kits are important components to keeping our staff and campers well. This team also works with the Out-Tripping Directors to support health concerns from our out trips, contributing to decision-making in regard to treatment in the field. Wellness staff must be willing to listen, problem solve, and work as a team to promote wellness and health at Pine Crest. They will provide leadership and role modelling to all camp staff regarding sun safety, healthy eating, adequate sleep and regular exercise among others.
In this role, you will:
- Continuously builds relationships with members, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Provide leadership to our Wellness Staff and Mental Health Specialist; ensuring constructive feedback is given on an ongoing basis and formalized in mid-season & end of summer appraisals
- Provides leadership to staff team; supports camp director and coordinator in leading health and wellness trainings to staff, ensuring we have a focus on both physical and mental health & safety
- Supports campers and staff to have positive experience at camp; through check in’s with campers, camper groups and counsellors
- Supports our camp community’s overall health & wellness; actively providing resources and support to the camp community, reviewing health forms of campers and staff, being aware of pertinent health information that may require special attention throughout the summer and checking in with staff and campers
- Day to day operational management of the camp wellness programs; working with wellness staff to delegate and ensure that keep inventory is kept of all medical supplies, laundry, restocking, organizing camper and stock medications etc.
- Responds to and rectifies first aid situations; ensuring they are handled promptly with care, and communicates with camp director, external health care staff/hospital and parents as necessary
- Medication administration; responsible for dispensing camper medication according direction of camper health forms
- Supports camp out-tripping program; through checks in pre-and-post out-trips, and supporting counsellors in packing and inventorying first aid kits
- Ensure administrative tasks are completed accurately and on time including all paperwork associated with the camp wellness program being filled out as required; maintains complete records of any accident/incidents.
- Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; showing up on time, and actively participating contributing to the development of all staff members
- Ensures Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained; and shares with the staff team the duties of ensuring is clean, organized and safe to ensure the health & safety of all camper, staff and volunteers
- Acts as a positive role model for all participants and fellow staff through embodying the values of the YMCA, Pine Crest’s guiding principles, YMCA policies and procedure, and Ontario Camps Association guidelines
- Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Children’s Aid Society
- Demonstrates appropriate behaviors in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member-focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
- Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with participants, volunteers, donors, and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
You bring:
- Minimum 21 years of age by the start of contract
- Completed degree in post-secondary education such as Nursing, Child and Youth Studies, or Social Work
- Previous Experience working with children and youth in a professional wellness setting
- G Class license, Mental Health First Aid by the first day of employment and valid until at least the last day of your contract
- Wilderness First Responder or equivalent experience in remote medicine considered and asset
- Demonstrated ability to lead and empower an inclusive staff team
- Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
- Must be a Canadian citizen, or permanent resident of Canada, or hold current and valid authorization (i.e., a work permit) under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) to engage in employment within camping and outdoor education
- Ability to work effectively with others and independently to achieve optimal collective results
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
- Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
- Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to both inexperienced and seasoned staff
- Ability to deliver feedback in a timely, professional, and constructive manner
- Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays required
