Summer Camp Director

Position: Director
Hiring for the upcoming season: 1 position

Camp Northern Lights’ mission is to provide a wilderness summer camp experience for disadvantaged youth aged 9 to 13 years old who otherwise would not have that opportunity. Thanks to community sponsorships, fundraising efforts and generous donors, Camp Northern Light offers subsidies for children from a low socio-economic background.

  • Reports to: Board of Directors
  • Start Date: June, 2023
  • End Date: August 28, 2023
  • Accommodations: Director’s Cabin and Camp Office

Position Purpose:

  • The Camp Director is in charge of overseeing the day to day operation of Camp Northern Lights as well as managing the staff and campers on site at any given time. The Camp Director is to be a resource to all staff, and to provide both written and verbal feedback and evaluations to counsellors, program staff, and other senior staff. The Camp Director will be the Board of Directors’ contact on site and will provide regular reports and updates to the Board on the general operation of camp.

Essential Job Functions:

  • -Planning and executing a complete and thorough pre-camp staff training program
  • -Providing guidance and support to other staff members in order for them to deliver effective, complete, and appropriate programming for children of all ages
  • -Attending daily programming and interacting with staff and campers
  • -Contacting parents and other organizations such as CAS with regards to camper registration questions and issues
  • -Running weekly staff meetings with the other senior staff
  • -Carrying out any disciplinary actions required
  • Qualifications (Minimum):
  • 4 years of experience, or similar experience working with children and as part of a staff team in an outdoor environment
  • Standard First Aid and CPR “C”
  • Bronze Cross or NLS (recommended)
  • Extensive experience as a staff member in any camp setting
  • Other Job Duties:
  • -Creation of weekly camper cabin lists and assignment of Program and Counselling staff to cabins
  • -Weekly Director reports which can be passed on to the Board of Directors at the end of the summer which encompass the summer’s operation
  • -Updating and managing the camp registration
  • -Other tasks as required by the Board of Directors

  • -Strong interpersonal skills
  • -Conflict management and resolution
  • -Ability to work as part of and lead a team
  • -Competent with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • -Ability to give effective constructive feedback
  • -Ability to communicate with a variety of age groups
