Program Staff- Sailing, Canoeing and Swimming

Wanted: Swim, Sailing and Canoeing Instructors!

Are you interested in spending your summer on a lake in Algonquin Park? Do you have a passion for aquatics and working with young people in the outdoors? If so, then you should come be a part of the Taylor Statten Camps staff team!

The Taylor Statten Camps are Canada’s oldest fourth generational family-run traditional summer camp. We are located on Canoe Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park. The camp is made up of Camp Wapomeo for Girls and Camp Ahmek for Boys. We run the Royal Lifesaving Society Awards program. Our camper’s age varies from 6 – 16.

Head Swim Instructor

Camp: Ahmek & Wapomeo

We are currently seeking two (2) Heads Swim Instructor, one (1) at each camp.

Job description:

Waterfront Staff must have the following minimum qualifications (or be willing to achieve them before the start of the summer):

  • Work with the Swim Instructor to deliver daily swim instruction classes to campers aged 6 to 16. Train and test all swimmers in the Royal Life Swimmers levels.
  • Prepare older campers  and work with the Examiner to test Royal Life Bronze Star, Medallion and Cross levels
  • Provide general Lifeguarding duties at free swims and oversee Counsellors in their Lifeguarding responsibilities
  • At least one summer of experience working in a waterfront or community pool environment.
  • Demonstrated competencies in aquatic skill delivery such as, facilitation, program planning, safety management and rescue.
  • Experience leading other staff in the delivery of an aquatics program.
  • Examiner qualifications are an asset but not a requirement.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Bronze Cross & Bronze Medallion Examiner optional
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR “B”
  • Royal Life Saving Instructor (able to teach Bronze Cross and Medallion)
  • NLS
  • Examiner qualifications are a significant asset but not a requirement.
  • Pleasure Craft Operator’s License

Compensation varies depending on age and experience. In the event we have 2 waterfront candidates for each camp, and neither have their Examiners, and both have generally similar experience, the Camp may assign Co-Heads of Waterfront at each camp. All positions include room, board, laundry and use of facilities.

Swim Instructors

Camp: Ahmek & Wapomeo

We are currently seeking two (2) Swimming Instructors, one (1) at each camp.

Job description:

Sailing Instructors

Camp: Ahmek & Wapomeo

We are currently seeking two (2) Heads of Sailing, one (1) at each camp.

Job description:

The Head of Sailing organizes sailing lessons and is also available when campers and staff choose to go sailing in their free time. The Head of Sailing must be comfortable rigging, operating, and instructing with 3 type of small sailboats- Zests, JY 15s and Laser IIs in various intensities of wind. The Head of Sailing at Wapomeo and Ahmek collaborate to organize and run the Roper Dayment Sailing Race in July and The Wilson in August. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. The TSC sailing program is not an advanced program although there occasionally some advanced sailors on staff – it focuses primarily on beginners and intermediate sailors getting fun, safe experience on the water and learning about the basics of wind direction and safe sailing.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Emergency First Aid or Equivalent and CPR “B”
  • Pleasure Craft Operator’s License
  • Bronze Cross or Equivalent
  • CANSail 4 Certification is an asset

We are currently seeking two (2) Canoeing Instructors, one (1) at each camp.

Job description:

The position centers around teaching canoeing lessons and facilitating the running of the canoeing program with the counselors. This person reports to the Program Director and is responsible for the development, safety, delivery and supervision of the Canoe program. The TSC canoe program is a flatwater only paddling experience and is the original historical foundation of the ORCKA Canadian Style Canoeing program. https://www.orcka.ca/orcka_program

The program ranges from teaching very basic canoe skills to Beginners with little to no experience in a canoe to assisting more advanced paddlers learn sophisticated strokes like pivots, landings, circles, feathering etc

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Current Bronze Cross
  • Current First Aid and CPR “C”
  • Boating license
  • Relevant canoeing experience
  • At least one summer of experience working in a canoeing environment.
  • Demonstrated competencies in canoe skill delivery such as, facilitation, program planning, safety management and rescue
  • Experience leading other staff in the delivery of a canoeing program
