The Program Directors are responsible for managing, operating and overseeing the Appleby Summer Camp Program area & the camp staff team for program area. Reporting to the Camp Director, this position involves extensive planning, program development & enhancement, facilitating cross-camp activities/themes, camper and parent care and engagement, staff training and risk management.

WHAT IS AMAZING ABOUT THIS JOB:
Pre-Camp Planning
- Organize, plan, and coordinate all aspects of program area that can be done prior to summer including purchasing supplies, recruit guest athletes for cross-camp activities and sub-committee work
- Work closely with the Camp Director to build & enhance the programs
- Attend monthly Senior Staff meetings December through June
- Correspond and check Program Director Camp email address
- Adhere to all health and Safety policies and protocols
- Contribute to the strategic planning and development based on research in the community, competitors, enrolment trends and analysis of previous years
- Visit local clubs, libraries, fairs and community centre events and distributing marketing materials
- Participate at local camp fairs. Support camp booths or programs organized for specific events
- Plan and coordinate themes within category and cross-camp with other Program Directors
- Assist Camp Director in the recruitment, hiring, and orientation of staff
- Develop and deliver training modules that support the professional development of sports staff and volunteers
- Plan cross-camp and cross-category activities, tournaments and shows
Summer: July, August
- Nurture a positive camp culture by leading, motivating, and developing strong teams
- Create activities that are welcoming for participants to join/observe aspects of camp (for the shy or timid campers)
- Ensure all training modules include an element of follow-up, discussion, and analysis to ensure the needs of the staff and campers are met
- Assist in scheduling all staff/volunteers; ensure all employee documentation for employee files are collected. Manage sick leave, absences, and staff issues
- Make sure of all facilities, equipment and programs are managed in accordance with the practices of Appleby College
- Prepare and deliver staff performance evaluations
- Be first aid response and behavior management response presence for all camps in program area
- Managing safe drop-off and pick-up for all campers in program area. Always present at these points, mingling and getting to know parents, helping, and answering questions
- Act as a parent liaison to build relationships with camper families and to ensure satisfaction and drive increased customer service
- Supervise camper lunches to make sure they run smoothly and participate in planning and execution of new activities and shows in lunch time periods
Post Camp Review
- Debrief after Summer is completed
- Gather suggestions/Ideas for the following summer
- Create Lessons Learned/Best practices documentation
YOU WILL BE A GREAT FIT IF YOU:
- Have leadership experience in a similar camp/recreation program setting
- Have strong people management & coaching skills
- Acquired related work experience in teaching in program area: sports, arts, science, discovery age group (4-5 yrs.) or working inclusion 1 -on 1 supporting participants)
- Possess strong organizational capabilities and be able to host/direct activities in front of large groups
- Have skills in co-ordination of large group events, competitions and/or performances, morning warm-ups, hosting all key end of week activities such as slideshows and tournaments and ensuring appropriate balance of “fun”damentals vs high performance training in all camps
- Can demonstrate senior leadership experience in a similar camp/recreation program setting
- Have proven ability to mentor young staff to work effectively with children and youth in a camp setting
- Strong independent work ethic
- Have related training and work experience building relationships with instructors, campers, camp families and staff
- Have exceptional communication skills
- Camp database systems such as Camp Brain and Microsoft Suite is preferred
- Strong multi-tasking abilities, trouble-shooting skills, and the ability to perform under pressure in accordance with daily challenges
- Have Standard First Aid Training and CPR- C or higher required (certified on or after September 2022
- Experience with Appleby Camps considered an asset
- Experience and knowledge within a summer camp environment is considered an asset
- Previous experience in a similar camp office administrator environment is considered an asset

- Part-time pre-camp prep work to be completed from December 2023 includes:
- Monthly Evening Meetings Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, April (Exact date/time TBD) and Individual homework
- Full Time Contract June 24 – Aug. 30, 2024
- Leading sessions during Staff Training Weekends Friday June 1 & 2, & June 16, 2024
- Bronze Cross and/or NLS certification in lifeguarding is an asset
- Valid driver’s license is required
Specific Program Area requirements:

- Early Discovery Program Director
- Have Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Recreation, Child Development, Leisure Studies and/or Education- Primary/Junior is preferred
- Are exceptional working with children ages 4 – 7
- Have relevant age group experience in a large day care or camp setting
- Directly supervise Camp staff working in the Discovery program
- Sports & Adventure
- Attained knowledge of (or have the ability to achieve) high level certification in canoeing: ORCKA certifications and/or Paddle Canada certifications in basic Canoeing/flat-water is an asset
- High & low ropes facilitation/training & climbing experience is an asset
- Current Boat License (Pleasure Craft Operator) required (to be obtained prior to Start of summer camp)
- Directly supervise Camp staff working in the Sports & Adventure programs
- Science & Success Program Director
- Have Science and/or engineering or computer science related degree is preferred
- Possess relevant science work experience developing and supervising junior/senior camps and teaching experience in camp or educational environments
- Exceptionally science subject knowledge & tech savvy with computers, robotics and video game design
- Knowledge or be willing to learn Robotics software (NXT, LEGO® ROBOLAB™)
- Understands Video game design and software options (e.g. Game-maker) would be considered as an asset
- Can exhibit strong organizational capabilities and experience hosting/emcee/ directing science fair in front of large group of parents and guardians
- Directly supervise Camp staff working in the Science & Success programs
- Arts Program Director
- Have Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or an Arts related field is an asset
- Are exceptional in strong skills and related work experience in the visual/fine arts, dance, theatre arts, music, acro, baking, cooking or music skills in camp or educational environments
- Can exhibit strong organizational capabilities and experience hosting/emcee/directing Friday showcases in front of large groups of parents and guardians
- Directly supervise Camp staff working in the Arts programs (Acro, Cake decorating & baking, Cartoons & Comics, Chefs in training, Creations with Clay, Dance, Exploring the Arts, Fashion Design, Glee Club, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts)
- Media Program Director
- Have Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts/Photography/Media or a related field is an asset
- Possess an excellent understanding of multi-media and work experience in the media arts in an educational or camp setting
- Have strong knowledge of graphics software including Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro and iMovie
- Photography experience including using a DSLR camera (Canon equipment used) and video equipment. Go-Pro knowledge an asset
- Experience in video/slideshow production
- Are Excellent in organizational capabilities and ability to host/direct shows and activities in front of large groups
- Oversee & Assist with Camp Communications team: Photographers, Videographers, Social Media Rep & Volunteer photographers to ensure website and photo galleries are updated and create weekly slide show
- Establish clear process and expectations of deliverables from communications team
- Directly supervise Camp staff working in the Media Camp programs (Music & Beat Production, Graphic Design, Film Making, Photography & Digital Cartooning)
- Inclusion Program Director
- Have education background in Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation, Child & Youth Worker, Personal Support Worker or relevant discipline considered is an asset
- Possess extensive experience working with individuals diagnosed with additional needs: ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), developmental disabilities, diabetes, emotional/behavioural concerns, learning disabilities, mental health, physical disabilities, Tourette’s in various recreation, camp or educational environments.
- Acquired strong work history in 1:1 capacity with complex special needs population (with behavioral challenges)
- Directly supervise Inclusion Facilitator staff team
- Monitor Camp Brain (registration software) for all Inclusion Campers
- Support and correspond with parents/guardians during application process helping gather information about campers, create schedules, facilitator matching to campers
- Before & After Care Program Director
- Have Post-Secondary graduate/youth related field/recreation, Sport and Leisure, Child and Youth, or related field is preferred
- Supervise and provide schedules of activities and responsibilities to all Before & After care Staff
- Possess relevant program planning and facilitation experience in a large day care, camp or similar setting required
- Position is responsible for supervising Before Care Program Hours: 7:30 am- 9:00 a.m., After Care 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
- Plan and implement a program for campers before/after camp, aimed at engaging campers in fun, recreational and a variety of age-specific activities
- Can exhibit strong skills & understanding working with children ages 4 – 7 years, 7 – 14 years with supervisory experience
- Assist, supervise and guide camp instructors assigned to before/after are on a rotational basis
- Communicate daily with parents/guardians in an open and supportive manner
- Appleby Overnight Program Director
- Organize, plan, and coordinate all aspects of Appleby Overnight program
- Supervise and provide schedules of activities and responsibilities to all summer Boarding Staff
- Have Post-secondary education. Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Recreation, Child Development, Leisure Studies and/or Education is preferred
- Can reside on Campus for each working night (Sunday to Thursday evenings from June 24 – 28 (training) and Aug 6 – August 23, 2024). This senior staff role will be supporting day camp and admin prep for Appleby Overnight between July 2 – Aug. 2, 2024
- Hold leadership experience in a similar overnight camp/recreation program setting
- Possess strong skills and demonstrated experience working with children ages 10-14
- Have related work experience/teaching in camp or educational environments
- Can demonstrate strong organizational capabilities and necessary confidence and be able to host games and activities in front of large groups
- Assist in creating a community that is conducive to campers’ personal success & ensuring safety and supervision
- Provide support to situations that develop in the boarding houses as they relate to logistics, emotional distress, discipline violations, accidents, physical or mental illness etc. while collaborating with the Director, Camp Programs
- Act as a parent liaison to build relationships with camper families and to ensure satisfaction and deliver optimal customer service
- Work with Summer Camp Day staff to ensure all Appleby Overnight Campers arrive on tie to their day camp programs, coordinate with attendance with Camp Office and ensure campers are fully engaged in camp
