Position: Outdoor Education Specialist
About Camp Scugog
Camp Scugog is a summer camp for children, youth and mothers affected by poverty.
Located near Port Perry, Ontario, we welcome almost 300 campers to the shores of
Lake Scugog each summer for an incredible week of friendship and fun in nature.
This fall, we’re excited to launch a Nature School. Our aim is to deliver an inquiry and
play-based outdoor education experience through daytime programming to children in
grades k-8.
Your Opportunity
The Outdoor Education Specialist will work in partnership with our Camp Director to
create a Nature School Program. They will be responsible for building the curriculum,
recruiting participants and delivering this new outdoor education initiative.
This is an incredible opportunity to curate an impactful program from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities, Program Development
• Plan and develop the curriculum/programming
• Assist with creating standards, policies, and safety guidelines, so that programs
are delivered safely and according to Camp Scugog’s policies and training
• Advertise Nature School, including online marketing and networking with local
communities to recruit participants
Key Responsibilities, Program Delivery
• Lead the delivery of Camp Scugog’s Nature School programming
• Support student learning, exploration and inquiry
• Effectively use the natural landscape to foster learning and spark curiosity of
• Connect with all registered families on an ongoing basis to develop rapport and
address any issues
• Ensure that effective safety protocols are in place
• Work collaboratively with camp staff and volunteers
• Maintain health and safety regulations of camp facilities
About You:
• Have entrepreneurial ambition and want to create a sustainable outdoor
education program
• Work independently and as part of a team
• Have excellent communication and time management skills
• Have outdoor/wilderness knowledge (including but not limited to: shelter building,
campfire building, campfire cooking, plant and insect safety, orienteering, etc.)
• Have basic ecological/environmental knowledge (i.e. food chains, water cycle,
ecosystems, some plant/tree ID, sustainability, climate change) or be willing to
seek outside training or self-study
• Are flexible and adaptable and can adjust quickly to changing circumstances,
priorities and conditions
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Studies,
Geography, Biology, or related field, an asset
• OCT Qualification, an asset
• 1-3 years education or experience in children’s environmental education and
recreational programming, community engagement, youth engagement, and/or
community programming
• Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C (or able to complete prior to start date)
• Current Criminal reference check with vulnerable sector
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
• Capable of performing teaching duties with enthusiasm regardless of the weather
(rain, sleet, snow, heat)
• Ability to walk distances and over uneven terrain, carry a backpack and supplies
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Employment Type
• Full-time, 12-month contract
• $48,500/annually
