Mountain Biking Skills Counsellor

Camp Huronda

Contract Dates: June 13 – September 2, 2022
Location: Camp Huronda, Huntsville, ON
About the Role:
The Mountain Bike Skills Counsellor is responsible for facilitating a high-quality mountain bike program, maintaining the fleet of mountain bikes, ensuring Camp Huronda trails and tracks/courses are cleared, repaired and maintained and ensure the program meets the Diabetes Canada National Camping Standards. All skill counsellors will be providing additional in cabin support to our counselling team as they will be living in caper cabins (where appropriate and possible). Skill counsellors will also be involved in participating and providing leadership to evening programs alongside the program team.

Responsibilities:

Program Area:
  • Provide the required skills and expertise to operate a safe and effective Mountain Biking program.
  • Set up, maintain, clean, inventory and organize the biking program area including trails.
  • Liase with the Land Area Head about supply needs and upkeep, program support, and lesson plan development and facilitation.
  • Ensure safety of campers and staff while at the mountain biking program area.
  • Ensure Staff have an understanding of their responsibilities while at the mountain biking program area.
Campers:
  • Assist campers in meeting daily and personal needs.
    • Equal supervision amongst counsellors for 24-hour camper supervision
    • Support in diabetes management
    • Behavior management
    • Changing of soiled laundry/linens
    • Feelings of missing home
    • Bed time, ZAP, key counselling programming (i.e. back pocket games)
Teamwork:
  • Attend all staff training
  • Actively and enthusiastically assist in leading all camp programs.
  • Maintain a positive, professional and constructive relationship with all staff members.
  • Report problems, situations and difficulties to the Land Area Head or Assistant Camp Coordinator.
  • Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned by the Assistant Camp Coordinator, Program Head or Camp Coordinator.
  • Report all accidents and incidents immediately to the Land Area Head or Assistant Camp Coordinator and cooperate in the completion of required follow-up.
About You: 
  • Experience teaching/coaching mountain biking
  • Ability to properly inspect and maintain mountain bikes
  • Ontario Mountain Biking Instructor an asset
  • 2+ years’ experience in a camp counselling role an asset
  • Require a Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screen
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certification
  • Previous camp experience an asset
  • Wilderness First Aid an asset
