Leadership/Trip Director

ORGANIZATION

Camp Kirk empowers neurodiverse kids and youth to reach their potential through recreational programs. Within a small and nurturing community, our programs emphasize strengths so that participants can develop confidence, connection and community. Camp Kirk supports neurodiverse kids and youth, ages 6-17. The majority of our campers have learning disabilities, autism, and/or ADHD  

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Leadership/Trip Director is a member of Camp Kirk’s summer Administration Team. Working collaboratively, the ‘Admin Team’ ensure the smooth operation of the camp, and the wellbeing of the campers and staff.

The Leadership/Trip Director plays a lead role within the summer season and will hold three primary responsibilities: 

  • Plan and facilitate Camp Kirk’s Leaders-in-Training (LIT) program
    • The LIT Program is geared to individuals who recently graduated from our camper program- please review the LIT Program Overview for details. The program will over the course of 18 days in July.
    • Directly supervise 6-8 LIT participants (ages 16-18) 
    • Plan and coordinate training sessions and leadership development programming
    • Train and support the General Staff to work with their assigned LIT’s
    • Organize and facilitate a 3-day camping trip for the LIT group 

 

  • Plan and facilitate Camp Kirk’s Wilderness Canoe Trip Program
    • The Leadership/Trip Director will be responsible for coordinating and leading Camp Kirk’s wilderness canoe trips during the month of August. Trips will vary in length from 1-5 days, and will take place in the Haliburton Highlands region. Responsibilities include:
    • ‘Pre-trip’ training and preparations with campers and staff (i.e. packing, leave-no-trace training, route overview, etc.)
    • Packing all food, equipment, and personal gear
    • Managing trip equipment inventory, and required care
    • Overseeing all aspects of risk management for the trips, including emergency plans and coordinating communication systems.
    • Ensuring the physical and emotional wellbeing of all trip participants

 

  • Directly supervise the Care Staff Team
    • Our two Care Staff positions are commonly reserved for former campers aged 19+. The Care Staff Team is responsible for camp laundry, cleaning, sanitation, and animal care. The Leadership/Trip Director will be responsible for training and directly supervising the Care Staff for the duration of the summer season.

 

CONTRACT DETAILS 

The dates of employment run from June 1st – August 30th, 2023. The compensation for the Leadership/Trip Director is $8,800 + room and board.

REQUIREMENTS + EXPECTATIONS

  • 21+ years of age by June 2023
  • 3+ years of experience working with children and/or youth
  • Previous experience leading wilderness canoe trips 
  • G-level Ontario driver’s license or equivalent
  • All staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Once hired, applicants must be willing to secure the following before their start date:
    • Minimum Bronze Cross swim certification
    • Wilderness First Aid certification
    • Criminal Record Check
