Nature and scope

YMCA Camp Pine Crest is located on 650 acres of beautiful Muskoka, Ontario wilderness, and has a distinguished history of providing exceptional camping experiences for all. It operates year round with a large traditional summer camp program, growing winter programs, and busy spring and fall outdoor centre seasons.

 

Reporting to the Vice President, Camping and Outdoor Education, the General Manager provides leadership and management of YMCA Camp Pine Crest, ensuring the successful day-to-day operations of the summer overnight camp and year round outdoor centre. These programs annually welcome thousands of campers, students, adults and families to Camp Pine Crest, and are run by dedicated seasonal staff (depending on the season, the amount of seasonal staff varies from 120 to 10). Leading a team of up to 10 direct reports, the General Manager assumes accountability for all aspects of Camp Pine Crest’s operations and strategic plans, including program development and implementation, budget management, community engagement and relationship building, staff training and coaching, and alumni initiatives. The position also works closely with various Association departments, to ensure alignment with Association plans.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership to annual planning, community engagement and goal setting to achieve a more diverse, equitable and inclusive programming at Pine Crest.

Manages and motivates team of direct reports, ensuring their own portfolio goals and responsibilities are on track for a successful outcome.

Develops flexible departmental financial parameters that identify targets in each program area; monitors all budgets on a monthly basis including revenue of $2.5 million (ensures accrued payables and receivables are managed appropriately, collection of fees, etc.); oversees approval process of over 150 YMCA Financial Assistance applications; provides regular reporting on financial forecasting to Vice President, Camping and Outdoor Education.

Closely follows program bookings and registrations (annually over $2.5 million) and monitors to ensure achievement of revenue targets; determines and implements action plans and strategies in situations of low enrolment or group dissatisfaction.

Meets regularly with the Pine Crest staff and Contact Centre team to review policies and practices related to sales, registration, collections, etc.

Inspires staff to provide high quality customer service and satisfaction to approx. 7,500+ participants and campers; acts as liaison/support for escalated customer service and parent concerns; approves exceptions, special refund requests, requests for over-enrollment.

Supports Directors and Supervisors in the recruitment process for seasonal camp and outdoor centre staff (approx. 200 team members) including analyzing staffing requirements, building staff plans, developing job descriptions, training, HR and payroll processes, etc. Participates in recruitment opportunities including attending job fairs, coordinating with summer job placement programs, and identifying other avenues to attract diverse group of staff.

Supports facility staff and the Asset Development department to maintain the facility and grow the capital infrastructure in line with the property plan. Monitors and supports daily maintenance, facility and equipment repairs, contract maintenance, and capital projects within budget.

Coordinates with various departments as needed to ensure all required materials and equipment are in good working order/provided to ensure smooth operation of programs; connects with Risk Management annually to update program and registration waivers for participation.

Provides strategic leadership regarding the promotion of all Pine Crest programs; works with Marketing & Communications to determine annual marketing and advertising plans and materials; explores new opportunities for advertising reach and impact.

Monitors the annual fundraising goals and ensures that targets are met; works closely with Fundraising to ensure proper use of Pine Crest capital funds and specific donation funds annually.

Ensures full time staff are well versed in the Muskoka community, and are actively involved and work in collaboration with community partners. Works in cooperation with internal and external partnerships to fully explore cross-functional programs that meet the needs of each unique client group including the local community; maintains partnerships with specialty organizations to place children with special needs in camp, other charities that refer clients for YMCA Financial Assistance, etc.

Participates on internal committees as requested, external committees (Ontario RDC, OCA); attends and conducts workshops at conferences; conducts research as requested; works closely with the Clear Lake Cottagers Association; represents Camp Pine Crest in YMCA Ontario work groups.

Coordinates with YMCA designates to conduct appropriate timely audits and review.

Works closely with Vice President, Camping and Outdoor Education and Pine Crest staff to strengthen the support of Pine Crest Alumni through annual events, newsletters, development of the Friends of Pine Crest Alumni program, opportunities for volunteerism, etc.

Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.  Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.

Ensures the health, safety and well-being of all children, youth and vulnerable people in YMCA programs. Commits to the professional responsibility of maintaining knowledge of legislation, policies and procedures, child and youth development and best practices to best serve and protect children, youth, and vulnerable people.

Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.

 

Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Recreation and Leisure Management or related field and/or equivalent experience
  • Previous senior level supervisory experience working in a camping and outdoor education environment and/or a large multi-service not-for-profit or charitable environment
  • A minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience required that shows progressive understanding of the YMCA and ability to establish strong relationships with community partners
  • Sound knowledge of child development
  • Sound knowledge of YMCA Camping Quality Recommended Practices
  • Previous experience in implementation and development of new programs and services is an asset
  • Strong budget management skills, collaboration and negotiation skills, and time management and problem-solving skills 
  • A hands-on, front-line leader that fosters a work environment that values and encourages teamwork and empowerment
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Commitment to respecting diversity and demonstrating inclusive behaviour, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of colleagues and members, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Proficient with computers, including Word and Excel
