Position: Director of Programming

Reports To: Camp Director & Executive Director 

Location: near Orillia area, Ontario, Canada

Camp Couchiching is seeking an amazing Director of Programming! This position is a full-time, seasonal  position from late April until early October. 

The Director of Programming will join a dedicated team of camp and youth development professionals committed to changing the lives of our campers and staff. The 2021 camping season will have additional serious considerations due to Covid restrictions/requirements however we are committed to ensuring our Camp is a place of joy creation. This is the KEY position to ensure that reflections and memories of our Camp are full of fun and happiness first and foremost.

Covering a wide range of duties,  this Director role does what needs to be done to give our campers, staff, rental groups, event participants, and school students the most amazing, joy-filled, camp experience possible with exceptional customer service. This role is dynamic, demanding, and constantly evolving. We are seeking applicants who are enthusiastic, dedicated, adaptable, fun, self-motivated, friendly and kind. The ideal candidate is one who wants to be immersed in a rewarding, challenging, and high-energy environment. Candidates should be very comfortable up being enthusiastic in front of large groups of people. 

Job Description 

Responsibilities could include: 

Leadership

Act as a positive role model for campers and staff through your demeanour and kindness by creating a safe space for people of all different backgrounds to feel safe and welcome. 

Works effectively with people with different abilities, gender,  ages, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity

Teach gratitude and pass on an appreciation of the contributions of others. 

Model respect and caretaking of yourself, others, and our community. 

Represent Camp Couchiching positively and professionally at all times. 

Sustain a state of awareness to safeguard and protect the camp community and guests through risk management and, if necessary, calm reaction. 

Collaborate in training the staff team, taking a lead in many of the training aspects related to programming.

Prepare and facilitate thorough and extensive staff training.

Support staff in creating opportunities for providing joy-filled experiences/interactions which are compliant with safety guidelines. 

Provide consistent leadership to camp staff through training, feedback, and coaching for optimal performance.

Program

Oversee and coordinate camps, events, school programs, and camp activities offered in a shared capacity along with the Camp & Executive Directors.

Meet the needs and surpass expectations of campers and / or participants.

Host rental groups and deliver camp activities to schools and user groups.

Ensure all programs comply with the Ontario Camps Association Standards & other applicable guidelines/standards.

Maintain a high level of energy and enthusiasm no matter what the situation. 

Provide a caring and supportive environment where campers feel safe and secure. 

Respond to operational emergencies and urgent unscheduled needs of guests. 

 

Health & Safety

Ensure the camp is clean to the highest standards possible meeting all requirements. 

Monitor staff and enforce health and safety procedures to be followed. 

Stay current with health and safety guidelines and follow most recent recommendations. 

Facility & Equipment Management

Organize and direct site and facility operations and manage building systems effectively. 

Upkeep the camp facilities in excellent working order and ensure the property is secure. 

Perform manual labour, clean facility, and execute minor repairs along with other staff. 

Keep an inventory of all camp program supplies/equipment, keeping them in safe working operation and organized. 

Maintain records and inspections as required by law and sound maintenance practice. 

Requirements & Compensation Qualifications 

3 years experience in senior positions in Recreation, Camp or Program Management

Completed post-secondary education preferred

Ability to clear a Criminal Reference Check with the Vulnerable Sector Search & Child Intervention Check

Full Driver’s Licence (or willingness to acquire by June) & Clean Driver’s Abstract for operations in Ontario

Current Standard or Wilderness First Aid (or willingness to acquire)

Current National Lifeguard Service during June to September and waterfront management experience

Essential Skills

Ability to work  irregular hours (evenings & weekends) at times and live on-site during programs

Possess capacity and endurance to work long days which are often under stress

Comfortable taking on lead roles in front of a group of people. 

Exceptional verbal and written communication and customer service skills

Ability for others-led play activation and support of development of unstructured play in a safe manner

Capacity to work outdoors in various weather conditions often on uneven terrain such as fields and forest paths

Superior time management and excellent organizational skills

Proficiency in G-Suite software and strong computer literacy (social media skills a plus!) (or willingness to learn)

Capable of working as in team and independent settings

Positive attitude and ability to take initiative with a flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities and a willingness to learn/be coached

Overnight camp experience

Compensation & Benefits

Pro-rated comparatively to a $40,000 annual salary (includes 4% vacation pay)

On-site private accommodations (not deducted from the salary but considered a taxable benefit) suitable for a small family

Consideration of successful candidates for future full-time employment will be considered based on the performance of the individual and the Camp’s capacity
