Nature and scope

YMCA of Greater Toronto’s Camping and Outdoor Education department offers the highest quality Day Camp programs for children and youth in approximately 50 locations across the Greater Toronto Area. Our Summer Day Camps offer numerous programs for 4-16 year olds that are safe, engaging, fun and contributing to the YMCA of Greater Toronto.

A Senior Director will provide direct leadership and support to an assigned number of camp locations. They are responsible for ensuring that on-site Camp Directors are set up for success and are well prepared so they are able to operate safe and high quality programming for campers. Senior Directors also support Camp Directors with staff development through coaching and mentoring.  Senior Directors act as a liaison between the Regional Director and on-site Camp Directors to provide and contribute to the ongoing success and growth of Day Camp programs.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership to camp staff team by training, coaching, motivating, monitoring performance and providing mid and end of summer performance appraisals to assigned Camp Director to ensure they are meeting the expectations of their role and achieving camp objectives.

 

Provides high-quality training to Day Camp Staff by working with the Day Camp Senior Leadership team to identify training and development needs throughout the summer, as well as creating and delivering day camp training meetings to ensure our staff are well prepared to support our campers.

 

Ensures Camp Director administrative tasks are completed accurately and on-time including all paperwork associated with program scheduling, staff payroll, accident/incident forms, camper attendance etc.

 

Supports campers having a challenging experience at Day Camp through visiting our day camp locations, and working with the Camp Director and Camp Support Lead to meet with staff, campers and camper families to problem solve when campers are not having a successful day camp experience.

 

Responsible for parent communication including checking email and voicemail daily, responding to all parent inquiries in a courteous and prompt manner (within 24 hours). Resolves any parent escalations to maintain a high level of customer service, and ensuring Regional Director is aware of all escalations.

 

Responsible for staff communication including working with Camp Directors to ensure that all camp locations are staffed to enrollment, and giving staff notice if they are required at another location.

 

Acts as a positive role model for children, youth and fellow staff through embodying the values of the YMCA, following all YMCA day camp guidelines, YMCA policies and procedures and Ontario Camps Association (OCA) Guidelines.

 

Assists with purchasing requirements; works Regional Director to ensure camp program materials, office supplies, etc. are purchased and adequately stocked throughout the summer to ensure we are delivering high-quality camp programs.

 

Ensures the delivery of successful, safe and high quality day camp programs by visiting day camp locations daily, observing and giving feedback on day camp programs, completing audits and communicating feedback to camp staff and directors to ensure all programs are following day camp program manuals.

 

Ensures Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained by checking that each location has a health and safety board and shares with the staff team the duties of ensuring all camps are kept clean, organized and safe to make certain we are meeting Health & Safety requirements.

 

Supports with creating and maintaining a positive camp environment through demonstrating a team-player mentality, supporting colleagues and sharing the responsibility of keeping the day camp warehouse environment clean and organized.

 

Assists with camp promotion and strategic marketing, which may include marketing in schools, at camp fairs and community events to ensure we meet camper targets numbers.

 

Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.  Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.

 

Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.

 

Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.

 

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (or currently enrolled) preferred
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a child-oriented programs; experience as a Supervisor an asset
  • Experience with YMCA Summer Day Camps an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C” for the duration of contract
  • Access to a vehicle and valid license and ability to travel within GTA required
