Day Camp Coordinator – Canterbury Hills Camp

The Day Camp Coordinator is primarily responsible for providing oversight and leadership to the Day Camp program including mentoring Day Camp Leaders and providing group support for Day Camp groups.

Salary: $10,970 (17 week contract)

*Please note: This contract starts on April 29th, 2024. Resource Team members will commute daily to our site in Dundas (Hamilton, Ontario) from April 29- June 9th, then are required to live onsite (Sunday-Friday) from approximately June 10th – August 24, 2024.

Spring (May-June) duties will include:

  • Assisting with staff hiring
  • Evaluating and updating practices of the Day Camp program
  • Coordinating 1:1 day camper intake
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of pre-camp training
  • Participating in Resource Team hard and soft skill training
  • Developing personal and program goals and objectives
  • Planning and implementing staff training events
  • Working on site improvement projects

Summer (July-August) duties will include:

  • Providing daily supervision, mentorship, and support for Day Camp Leaders
  • Being present for Day Camp arrival and departure each day
  • Upholding daily communication to caregivers during pick up and drop off times
  • Addressing camper concerns to caregivers in a timely manner
  • Collaborating with caregivers as needed to implement strategies for camper success
  • Leading daily Day Camp Staff meetings
  • In collaboration with Camp Director, making camper and Unit Leader placements for upcoming camp sessions
  • Providing oversight and support to Day Camp Units throughout their daily schedule
  • In collaboration with the Camp Director, providing oversight and support of the 1:1 Integration program
  • Engaging in ongoing staff check-ins and coaching
  • Implementing a performance evaluation process established by the Camp Director for all summer staff
  • Collaborating within the Resource Team to contribute to tasks related to office administration, health and wellness, and the Leader-in-Training program

The Day Camp Coordinator is a member of the senior staff team, called the RESOURCE TEAM at Canterbury Hills. The Resource Team works collaboratively with the Camp Director and Assistant Director to oversee all aspects of the summer camp program. All team members balance Resource Team and individual responsibilities throughout the work term.

All Members of the Resource Team will:

  • Have strong leadership, initiative, organizational, and administrative skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Be able to initiate, support, and encourage spiritual growth of campers and staff
  • Be able to relate well to a variety of ages and demonstrate an ability to mediate, facilitate, and build unity among staff
  • Enjoy working with children and possess relevant soft skills in youth interaction
  • Exhibit commitment to serving campers and staff as per the mission of Canterbury Hills and values of inclusivity, collaboration, celebration of successes, and asking of questions
  • Welcome all and celebrate diversity within Canterbury Hills Camp
  • Have previous experience working in summer camp (preferred), or equivalent experience.
  • Submit a Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening by contract start date
  • Obtain Standard First Aid & CPR C Certification by June 30th, 2024

Additional Qualifications considered an asset:

  • NL (National Lifeguard) certification
  • Challenge Course Certification – ACCT Level 1 or 2
  • Valid G class drivers license
  • Ontario Food Handlers Certificate

  • Resource Team Work Begins: Monday April 29th
  • Resource Team Move In: June 10th (To Be Confirmed)
  • May Staff Training Weekend: May 17th – 20th
  • Head Unit Leader Training: June 17th – 25th
  • Staff Training Week: June 26th to July 5th
  • Camp sessions begin: Sunday July 7th
  • 7 weeks of camp sessions through July and August
  • Camp sessions end: Friday August 23rd
  • Staff clean-up, debrief, and celebration: Saturday August 24th
  • Optional Contract Extension: August 26th – 30th
