ABOUT US

For 38 years, CAMPFIRE CIRCLE (formerly known as Camp Ooch & Camp Trillium) has offered healing through happiness for thousands of kids affected by childhood cancer, and families. It’s where kids can be kids, and families can be families—engaging in camp-inspired community, in-hospital, and overnight camp programs, at no cost to them. With no government or hospital funding, a caring community surrounds them to make life-changing experiences possible throughout the year, all across Ontario.

THE OPPORTUNITY

CAMPFIRE CIRCLE will be running in-person weekends at overnight camp at two sites in Ontario: in Muskoka (Rosseau) and Rainbow Lake (Waterford). These winter weekends at camp will provide kids and families affected by childhood cancer with fun, friendship and community.

Do you have experience or interest working in food services in a team-based environment? We are searching for Cooks to join our kitchen staff at Rainbow Lake for four weekends this winter.

Weekends at camp will take place Friday-Sunday, starting February 11th, 2022 and ending March 13th, 2022, with no program running Family Day weekend. We have a variety of part-time shifts available, and the rate of pay for this role is $19/hr.

Reporting to the Food Service Manager, our Cooks are responsible for assisting the Lead Cook in the coordination of the kitchen, dining hall, kitchen assistants and volunteers and will provide support in the following key areas:

Health & Safety:
• report to the Food Service Manager any problems with equipment, risks, issues, or challenges in the kitchen
• ensure that regulations are followed from the health & safety act, the Ontario Camping Association and CAPOC
• follow specific dietary requirements for campers and staff (i.e. low cholesterol diets)
• ensure appropriate records and logs are being completed (i.e. refrigeration temperatures)
• follow a kitchen checklist procedure for opening and closing kitchen
• be knowledgeable in all equipment, food handling preparation and sanitation
• report and follow up on any incidents and disclosures with the Food Service Manager
• report any problems with equipment, risks, issues or challenges in the kitchen
• understand and implement allergy control procedures when necessary (i.e. Nut allergies) and maintain a nut aware facility
• ensure all areas and tasks are safe at all times.

Food Preparation & Service:
• follow the menu plan as designed for the week
• be flexible to the special dietary requests that may occur last minute
• work with staff in theme meals (i.e. backwards day supper for breakfast)
• assist staff with food related programs (i.e. cookie baking free for all’s)
• when serving meat provide a protein alternative for vegetarian diets that is equally exciting
• responsible for the preparing, serving and cleaning up after each meal service
• assist with the preparation, packing and unpacking of camp programs such as out tripping, free for all’s, theme meals etc. while following all appropriate food handling and sanitation techniques
• ensure that food is utilized effectively and efficiently (minimizing food wastage while maintaining appropriate food demand)
• ensure that all food storage and disposal is done according to proper policy and procedure (according to Campfire Circle, Health & Safety, OCA and CAPOC standards). This includes the disposal of kitchen and Dining Hall garbage, recycling and compost.

Other Duties:
• supervision and implementation of recycling program
• keeping track and care of kitchen equipment (ie. loaning and returning of kitchen products to program staff).

Medical & Confidentiality:
• maintain confidentiality at all times (ie. dietary needs, medical information and allergies of campers, staff, volunteers etc.).

Staff and Volunteer Working Environment:
• develop and maintain working relationships with each staff, Intern and volunteer to contribute to a healthy, productive and positive working environment inside and out of the kitchen
• communicate appropriately with staff, senior staff and directors to help prevent any problems amongst the staff
• ensure a safe and respectful environment for everyone is being maintained
• establish a check in system and ongoing feedback for staff and volunteers that you are working closely with each session
• help to create and maintain a physically and emotionally safe work environment for kitchen staff and volunteers
• help to create and maintain appropriate working relationships with co-workers, staff and volunteers.

ABOUT YOU

In order to be a successful part of our outstanding staff team, you’ll be passionate about playing a key role in helping to support the food service program at our Rainbow Lake site in Waterford. We are looking for staff who have some experience working in a kitchen, are able to maintain confidentiality of food-related medical information (ie. Dietary needs or allergies), and who easily build and maintain positive and respectful working relationships with others. Great communication skills and experience successfully supervising others are also beneficial.

In accordance with our mandate of creating a caring and safe environment for ill children and their families, we require attestation of childhood vaccinations, updated Police Record with Vulnerable Sector Screening, and proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 for all of our staff. We also require that all staff be currently eligible to work in Canada.

These positions have the option to live at the Rainbow Lake site during shifts, or commute to and from the site daily for shifts.
