Compensation: $88/day plus room and board
Location: Camp Woodeden (London, ON)
Employment Dates: June 7, 2022 – August 30, 2022.
Reporting directly to the Challenge Course Head, the Challenge Course Counsellors are responsible for facilitating a high quality, accessible high ropes, giant swing, climbing wall, and rainy-day backup program. Challenge Course Counsellors work as a team to provide appropriate supervision for Challenge Course programs, ensure that the course elements are cleaned and well maintained and meets relevant Ontario Camps Association and legislative guidelines/regulations.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
• Develop program goals following the Easter Seals Ontario camp goals & objectives.
• Develop a risk management plan for the high ropes course program area.
• Develop a program that meets the needs and abilities of the campers.
• Provide substitute activities for days when the weather prevents outdoor activities.
• Responsible for completing an inventory upon arrival and prior to departure from camp.
• Orient the entire staff to the rules, regulations and emergency procedures while participating on the high ropes courses.
• Make certain that the program area is clean, safe and that all equipment is cared for properly and stored in a safe manner. Report any necessary repairs to the Site Manager.
• Document and report any accidents or incidents occurring in the program immediately to the Nursing Team.
• Ensure proper completion and timely submission of all reports.
Other Job Duties
• Responsible for providing camper care when not programming. This includes: bathing, showering, brushing teeth, hair care, toileting (changing attends), clean intermittent catheterization, dressing, feeding, lifting and transferring, and any other activities of daily living that the campers require.
• Participate as a member of the program staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnight, and other all-camp activities.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager of Camp Operations or Challenge Course Head.
Physical Aspects of the Job
• Ability to observe camper behaviour and apply appropriate behaviour-management techniques, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures.
• Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
• Able to manage climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching as well as daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions
Minimum Age: 18 years
Previous teaching experience an asset. Excellent leadership and communication skills. CPR or Standard First Aid is required prior to the start of the camp season. Appropriate challenge course training will be provided by Easter Seals Ontario through Challenges Unlimited, however previous ropes experience is an asset.
• Easter Seals Ontario camps are fully accessible and provide camping experiences to kids and young adults with disabilities.
• It is required that all staff be fully vaccinated against Covid19 and follow the health and safety recommendations provided by Provincial and Regional Health Units.
• Camp staff members are required to participate fully in the camp activities. This may include swimming every day, sailing, dressing-up and working with children/youth all day.
• Should be capable of lifting and transferring 15 – 25 kgs in a safe manner.
• Onsite housing provided for camping season and meals provided on camp session days.
• June – August eight-day work period, 24 hours/day on call with scheduled breaks throughout the day and three days off between sessions.
