Canterbury Hills Assistant Director

Position: Assistant Director
Type of Position: Spring/Summer Contract, Full-Time
Salary: starting at $600/week
Start/Finish Date: April 27 – August 30, 2023

The Assistant Director works closely with the Camp Director to oversee the coordination and administration of the summer camp program including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and monitoring program activities.

The Assistant Director will:

  • Have strong leadership, initiative, organizational, and administrative skills, and ability to work in a team environment
  • Be able to initiate, support, and encourage spiritual growth of campers and staff
  • Be able to relate well to a variety of ages and demonstrate an ability to mediate, facilitate, and build unity among staff
  • Enjoy working with children and possess relevant soft skills in youth interaction
  • Exhibit commitment to serving campers and staff as per the mission and values of Canterbury Hills

  • Have previous experience working in summer camp (preferred), or equivalent experience.
  • Submit a Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening by contract start date
  • Obtain Standard First Aid & CPR C Certification by June 30th, 2023
  • Agree to the full term of employment and is available to work the appointed schedule.
  • Attend and participate fully in all Staff Training programs


1. Program Delivery: Develop, organize, promote, and manage the implementation of programs to ensure they achieve Canterbury Hills Camp’s goals and mission

  • Assist in pre-camp planning and policy development
  • Oversee, coordinate, and manage daily operations and program functions of the summer camp program
  • Update and promote LIT program model for summer 2023
  • Liaise with parents for all summer camp program related questions and concerns

2. Program Quality: Ensure that the summer camp program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization

  • Ensure excellent parent and staff communication during the summer camp season; respond to concerns and requests, resolve issues, manage feedback and be accessible to parents who have questions pertaining to the summer camp and campers experience
  • Be familiar with the principles of inclusivity and have experience with integrated programming for campers of diverse backgrounds and exceptional needs
  • Assist in behaviour management for the summer camp program
  • Ensure the provision of safe & adequate equipment, facilities & training to drive a fun, recreational and engaging camp program for campers.
  • Ensure camp facilities are kept in clean and safe condition for campers and staff

3. Staffing and Leadership: Working with the camp committee and camp director, recruit, interview and select well-qualified program staff. Ensure all staff members receive orientation and appropriate training in accordance with organizational standards

  • Implement the human resources policies, COVID-19 policies, procedures, and practices of the organization
  • Be a role model in building staff culture of inclusivity, collaboration, celebration of successes, and asking of questions
  • Help staff to understand clear expectations of their roles
  • Implement a performance evaluation process established by Camp Director for all summer staff
  • Engage volunteers for appropriate program activities using established volunteer management practices
  • Ensure that all staff receive an appropriate orientation to the organization and the programs
  • Assist in planning and delivery of staff training for all summer camp staff
  • Foster an effective and creative work environment that supports staff and volunteer’s personal development, creativity, collaboration and transparency
  • Supervise and delegate to Resource Team members by providing direction, input, and feedback

4. Marketing and Promotion: Represent and promote camp activities and facilities within the Diocese of Niagara and the community.

  • Potential to attend church presentations, job fairs, school visits, conferences to promote camp activities
  • Promote programming opportunities to school boards and other youth focused organizations

Key Dates for 2023

  • May Staff Training Weekend: May 19th – 22nd
  • Staff Training Week: June 28th to July 6th
  • Camp sessions begin: Sunday July 9th
  • 7 weeks of camp sessions through July and August
  • Camp sessions end: Friday August 25th
  • Staff clean-up, debrief, and celebration: Saturday August 26th
  • Resource Team debrief day: Sunday August 27th
