Camp Tamakwa is looking for Canoe Trip Leaders
ABOUT US:
Camp Tamakwa is an overnight summer camp based 3 hours north of Toronto in Algonquin
Provincial Park. Founded in 1936, Tamakwa is home to over 250 campers aged 7-16. Tamakwa
prides itself on traditional values, camp spirit, safety and skills development, our rich traditions,
family atmosphere, and unique location distinguishes itself, along with numerous watersports,
landsports, creative arts, outdoor skills activities and a premier canoe tripping program.
CANOE TRIP LEADER JOB
DESCRIPTION:
Canoe Tripping is a cornerstone
program at Camp Tamakwa.
Trippers spend their summers
paddling and portaging on trips of 2 –
15 days through Algonquin Park
leading groups of campers aged
7-16. Canoe trips at Tamakwa offer
campers the opportunity for
individual challenge, team building,
adventure, and an appreciation of
nature. Every camper will embark on a canoe trip as an important and valued part of their camp
experience.
Trippers report directly to the Canoe Trip Director and are responsible for all aspects of the trip
experience as well as ensuring the safety and well-being of campers and staff while upholding the
values and traditions of Tamakwa’s canoe tripping program.
All Trippers attend a two week training
period in June that includes a five day
canoe trip, this trip enables all Trip Staff
to become familiar with Algonquin Park
and all it has to offer while also learning
wilderness travel skills, and Tamakwa’s
Tripping policies.
Tamakwa also has a Junior Trip Leader
(JTL) program for 17 and 18 year olds
where more experienced Trippers will
support and act as mentors to the JTL’s
both on the trail and in camp.
CANOE TRIP LEADERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
● Leading Safe and fun Canoe Trips
● Meeting with campers and staff to plan a menu based on allergies and preferences.
● Consulting with the Medical Staff to review health concerns and medications required
● Ensuring all participants are ready for the trip with adequate clothing and personal gear
● Teaching campers and staff paddling and portaging skills
● Ensuring that your Trip adheres to the rules of Algonquin Park.
● Acting as responsible and respectful ambassadors of Camp Tamakwa
● Modelling, teaching and reinforcing the proper use and care of the tripping equipment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
● National Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross
● Wilderness Advanced First Aid (40 hour course)
● Criminal Reference check
● Minimum age 19 to be a Canoe Trip Leader and 17 to be a Junior Trip Leader
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE/QUALITIES:
● Participation in an Outdoor Education program at University or College, Duke of Edinburgh
Award, Scouts/Guides, NOLS, etc
● Time spent working with youth
● Overnight Backcountry travel (hiking, paddling, biking, etc)
● Time spent in a Canoe
● A sense of adventure/generally outdoorsy
● Ability to work as part of a team
● Experience leading groups
● Good communication skills
