Canoe Trip Leader

Canoe Trip Leaders guide groups of campers and staff on overnight canoe camping trips. The trips vary in length from 1 – 3 nights, with the potential for some longer trips later in the summer. The purpose of our tripping program is to facilitate a small group experience that is out of the comfort zone for many of the campers, and an opportunity to experience nature.

Canoe Trip Leaders work together with the camp’s kitchen and administrative staff to organize all aspects of trip planning including route selection, meal planning, and all packing and pre-trip organization. On trip, they navigate, make site selection, teach campers how to set up the site and cook the meals, etc. They are wholly responsibly for the health and safety of all participants.

Our trips take place in Algonquin Park, the Haliburton Highlands, and other locations in Ontario.

For the first four weeks of camp, Canoe Trip Leaders rotate together through each age group, taking one cabin – at a time – on a mandatory canoe trip. In the second session, trips are optional for campers, and leaders are free to be creative and develop a special focus for their trips (focus on white water/rapids, arts & crafts, hiking, cooking, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS

All canoe trip leaders must have a minimum of Bronze Cross and Emergency First Aid with CPR-B. Wilderness First Aid Certification is preferred. Trips are mostly in flatwater areas. ORCKA certifications are an asset.

Experience working with children and youth is preferred. Please note that many of the campers experience anxiety around the canoe trip experience. Warmth, sensitivity and patience are a must.
