Nature and scope

YMCA Camping and Outdoor Education offers outdoor experiences that foster personal growth and build community.  After taking part in our programs, children and youth return home more confident, independent, and with new friendships. YMCA Camp Pine Crest is a 650-acre property accessing three lakes, located in Muskoka, approximately 20 minutes north of Gravenhurst. Since 1910, Pine Crest has been providing high quality overnight summer camp experiences. Summer 2023 we will offer over 1000 weeks of camp to children and youth 5 – 16 years old. In addition to summer camp, Pine Crest offers outdoor education programs, family camps, retreat weekends as well as facility rentals and other unique programs in our spring, fall and winter seasons.

The Summer Camp Director is an integral part of the leadership team at Pine Crest. The Summer Camp Director is one of currently eight full-time positions at Pine Crest, directly supporting the full-time Assistant Camp Director, and supervising 100-120 seasonal staff in the summer. Coming out of the pandemic, this individual will play a key role in the successful re-build of our seasonal staff team and summer camp programs. Pine Crest is rooted in traditions, including one that every camper has a canoe-trip experience, and thus it is critical that the Camp Director has some background and knowledge in canoe-tripping. The successful candidate will be hard-working, organized, kind, a strong leader and a team player dedicated to a high level of customer service.

There is an opportunity for the Camp Director to live on site year-round in a shared accommodation; although this is only mandatory for when summer camp is in operation. In the non-summer months, the Camp Director is expected to work in our office at camp regularly with some travel to other locations as required.

Responsibilities

Supervisory duties; including working with the full-time Assistant Camp Director to set up and conduct interviews, complete reference checks, and hiring a well-balanced, child-focused, qualified summer staff team ensuring they meet all the minimum requirements of their role. The Camp Director directly supervises the full-time Assistant Director, and the Seasonal Assistant Director, Wellness Director and Camper Experience Director in the summer

Provides leadership to staff team; living on site during summer operations the Camp Director will be responsible for training, coaching, motivating, monitoring performance and providing appraisals to ensure staff are meeting the expectations of their role and achieving camp objectives

Customer service and communication; working closely with the General Manager, Marketing Manager, camp office staff and our YMCA Contact Centre Customer Service team, the Camp Director will ensure we meet and exceed parents expectations at all points of their camp experience from registration, to pre-camp communication and communication while camp is in session, through creating effective communication plans and responding to parents emails and inquires in a timely manner

Program leadership; working in partnership with the Outdoor Centre Director, General Manager and the rest of the full-time team the Camp Director will ensure excellence in all areas of camp operation, and alignment with Pine Crest guiding principles, YMCA Camping Quality Recommended Practices (CQRP) and Ontario Camping Association (OCA) standards

Achieves assigned budget; working with General Manager to develop appropriate budgets, manage revenue and expenses to meet and exceed targets

Program supply purchasing; ensures Pine Crest program supply inventory is maintained and ensures camp program supplies are purchased as requires, within the camp budget, and invoices/receipts are submitted on time

Administration tasks: Ensuring administrative tasks are completed accurately and on time including all summer program set up documents, paperwork associated with hiring, payroll, staff scheduling, parent communication and surveys, accident and incident forms, YMCA visa reconciling etc.

Health and Safety: Works with the team to ensure all camp areas are clean, organized, well maintained and we are being proactive in health and safety, risk management plans are in place and all audit requirements are met

Demonstrates appropriate behaviors in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.  Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.

Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.

Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.

Qualifications

Skills

  • Ability to lead and empower a staff team of young leaders
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work constructively as a team member in a complex organizational setting
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Must be flexible to work days, evenings, weekend and holidays
  • Must have access to a vehicle. YMCA Camp Pine Crest is not accessible by public transit however, on site accommodation can be provided (rent required for non-summer months)

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in recreation, outdoor education, education, or related field
  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience in the camping and outdoor recreation field
  • Standard First Aid and CPR required
  • National Lifesaving Society (NLS) preferred
  • Challenge Course Level 2 Facilitator preferred
  • Valid G License required, F class license an asset
