Camp Custodian

Position Title: Camp Custodian (1-2 positions available) 

Program: Christie Lake Kids Camp  

Reports To: Camp Director/Assistant Camp Directors/Facilities Manager 

Contract length: July 1st – August 13th 

Salary: $23.00-28.00/hour 

Location: Christie Lake Kids Camp – Westport, ON 

Organizational Background  

Christie Lake Kids (CLK) is a charitable organization that has been serving children and youth living in low-income households in the Ottawa area since 1922. CLK provides year-round services to children and youth through an excellent camp experience and strategically located city recreational opportunities through the STAR (Skills Through Arts and Recreation) program. Our mandate is to provide high quality recreation opportunities that help children and youth build the skills necessary for developing long-term resiliency.

Job Summary 

The Camp Custodian will be responsible for the cleaning and sanitation of all communal camp washrooms and showers. 

Service Dates (on-site) 

  • July 1st – July 12th  
  • July 17th – July 27th  
  • August 1st – August 11th  
  • August 13th  

*No services between July 13th – 16th, July 28th – 31st & August 12th 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Including but not limited to, 

  • Clean and disinfect all toilets (including unclogging when necessary) 
  • Clean and sanitize sinks, countertops and soap dispensers 
  • Clean and disinfect showers and shower area 
  • Disinfect all high touch surfaces daily 
  • Clean contaminated wall surfaces (as needed) 
  • Sweep and mop floors every day including emptying mop water in designated location 
  • Refill toilet paper, paper towel and soap dispensers as needed 
  • Empty garbage cans and dispose of garbage in designated location 
  • Care for and maintain all equipment required for the cleaning service 
  • Inform Camp Management or the Facilities Manager of any low stock of cleaning supplies or equipment 
  • Inform Camp Management or the Facilities Manager of any problem areas including broken or damaged equipment or infrastructure 
  • Carry out any other related tasks as designated by Camp Management or the Facilities Manager 

*All cleaning supplies, equipment and PPE will be provided onsite by Christie Lake Kids. 


  • Work in a manner that mitigates risk and always puts safety first  
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with all staff members and campers 
  • Maintain professional working relationships with all team members 
  • Respect and value intersectional inclusion, diversity equity and accessibility 

Desired Skills and Qualifications 

  • WHMIS certified 
  • A clear Police Record Check 
  • Access to dependable transportation to commute to and from the camp property for daily shifts 
  • Availability between 10:30am-6:00pm (2.5 – 6 hour shifts) 
  • Knowledge of different cleaning supplies, tools and procedures 
  • Knowledge of safety procedures 
  • Ability to carry out tasks effectively in a timely fashion with minimal supervision 
  • Attention to detail 
  • Flexibility to work with team members or individually 
  • Experience working in a custodian role in a child/youth centered environment 
  • Be of excellent character, modeling honesty, integrity and respect 
  • Possess enthusiasm, energy, patience and sense of humour 


  • Experience working in a camp/overnight camp setting 
  • Current Standard First aid with CPR-C 

Physical Requirements 

The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation 

Due to the nature of to role, candidates must be able to: 

  • Occasionally transport supplies/equipment up to 40 lbs 
  • Prolonged standing 
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (heat, high sun exposure, rain etc.)
