Assistant Camps Coordinator


The Assistant Camps Coordinator provides day-to-day oversight of all aspects of the in-person Day Camps program in partnership with the Camps & Aquatics Coordinator. The Assistant Camps Coordinator provides assistance with administration, customer service, and program development for the Day Camp program. This includes responding to inquiries from interested families, leading the development of Camp programs and curriculum, coordinating the planning and delivery of staff training, and leading the Camp Leadership Team.

January 10 – April 29: 10 hours / week

May 2 – June 17: 35 hours / week

June 20 – August 26: 40 hrs / week


  • Post-secondary education (completion or enrolment in a post-secondary program) in a related field or commensurate experience
  • Minimum 2 seasons of camp staff (or similar) experience, including 1+ seasons leading staff, children, and youth
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with campers, parents/guardians, and staff
  • Demonstration of strong leadership skills developed through progressively responsible experience in a supervisory role
  • Proven ability to work as a team member in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to encourage and motivate staff, and acknowledge and appreciate contributions
  • Desire and ability to provide leadership to children and youth in a day camp setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter and organizer
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR ‘C’ certification
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check

Role-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist with coordination of daily external Day Camp communication (phone, email, etc.)
  • Lead the delivery of full Camp programs (including Opening and Closing Circle, lunch, snack)
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Camps Leadership Team
  • Initiate regular communication with Camp families
  • Lead the development and delivery of staff training
  • Facilitate the development of activity lesson plans to be followed by Counsellors and other Camp staff
  • Maintain records of all programs, and provide Camps & Aquatics Coordinator with detailed report on programs at end of the season
  • Facilitate the recruitment, hiring, and training of Day Camp staff and volunteers
  • Provide formal and informal feedback to Day Camp staff and volunteers
  • Alongside the Camps & Aquatics Coordinator, interpret and apply relevant public health guidance for the safe operation of camp programs in response to COVID-19

General Responsibilities

  • Assist with input information into the CampBrain database
  • Ensure the confidentiality of all camper, family, and staff information in accordance with Ryerson’s Privacy Policy
  • Assist Camp & Aquatics Coordinator to oversee Day Camp and Ontario Camps Association standards within all areas of Camp operations
  • Ensure all Camp activities are proactive in supporting health and safety of campers and staff
  • Ensure risk management plans are in place
  • Set a positive example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, and attitude
  • Follow and enforce Day Camp rules as outlined in the Staff, Volunteer, and Camper Codes of Conduct
  • Assist in creating and maintaining a culture of inclusivity, belonging, pride and excellence in Athletics & Recreation facilities by providing excellent customer service to campers, families, and guests
  • All other duties as assigned or required
